West Virginia. Wild and Wonderful is the motto — and quite fitting to HyperFest. HyperFest is a massive motorsports party that's been held at Summit Point raceway each year for the past decade. This year's activities included NASA Racing series, US Drift competition, car show, roll-over contest, stunt bikes, live DJs and more.
Let's check out some of the highlights.
Upon entering the event you'll walk immediately in to the vendors area and car show. We arrived 30 minutes after the gates opened and cars continued to roll in through the day, filling every inch of available hard parking.
Continue walking toward the loud engine sounds and you'll find the grand stands overlooking the more interesting part of Summit Point's circuit. US Drift practice began just before noon.
If you wanted to experience the thrill of smoky sideways action you could sign-up for a ride along as one of 3 passengers with a professional drifter. Talk about the family outing!
The view from the grand stands provided visibility of the drifters coming down the 'chute in spectacular fashion.
And as soon as the US Drift practice was over the action continued on. The morning hours were filled with HPDE sessions...
...NASA Racing series featuring Honda Challenge, Spec Miata, American Iron, German Touring and Spec E30s.
Then more HPDE sessions where you could learn from instructors how to drive safe and fast on track in front of a crowd.
There were a lot of Corvettes.
Let's not forget about the 24 Hours of LeMons. In the midst of HyperFest, just a short walk over was the spectacle of budget racing at it's finest. Yes, that's a boat battling for position with a taxi. That Saab looks like a well sorted winner.
Meanwhile, back to the main circuit a roll over contest ensued.
Followed by stunt riders. This guy actually took his shoes and pants off while riding a wheelie and then jumped over the handlebars while managing to park the bike upright on the kickstand. I'm not particularly impressed by motorcycle stunts but that was pretty good.
Then Vaughn Gitten JR showed up to officially kick off the US Drift . Smoke ensued. Lots of smoke. People love burnouts.
The atmosphere was perfect. The sun setting in the distance. The engines roaring. A fog of tire smoke soon covered the infield.
As a part of the media we were able to get right up on the action to bring you the best possible photographs.
Mid way through the competition the LS2 powered Sikky 350Z got exchanged a bit too much paint and ended up getting towed away with a busted front suspension. It appeared the day was over.
But the Sikky crew wasn't having it. They repaired the Z in what seemed like mere minutes to have it back out for the following round.
And making a miraculous run to not just the finals, but taking the overal victory!
